First There Was Wearable Art - Now There Is Wearable iPods!

Pod à porter - neckband for iPod shuffle We have done posts about iPod-as-jewelery in the past - and there have been some very funky and veeeery expensive takes on this. But the latest designer gear for iPods is really in a class of its own. Its not really jewelery - though it is worn around the neck. And it still has the ear buds attached! And its made of high tech  3D printed polyamide. And its precision manufactured.

Which all sounds more like a piece of technology - not jewelery. After all jewelery is made from precious metals and gem stones - or copies of them.  And the Pod à porter - what this “gadget” is called - definitely is not made of them. And at around $27, its not expensive either.

So lets take a look at this thing: Its super light, has an iPod Shuffle plugged in one end and the ear buds at the other.  It comes in 5 colors - black, white, magenta, blue and green. It ONLY fits the 3d generation iPod Shuffle. And it was designed by Michiel Cornelissen.

Does it look good as well as give hands-off usability? See for yourself:

A final touch (yuk yuk) in the whole process is that your necklace is literally made to order. The Pod à porter is “printed” off for you once you submit your order and then mailed to you!

Instant wearable technology!

iPod Bling Bling

Posted on Mar 28, 2010 under ipod accessories | No Comment

Just a fun post today as we take a walk down memory lane to recall some of the most impressive designs for iPod bling:
First up there is the  gold and diamond decorated iPod Shuffle that went on sale for a cool $41K back in 2007.

Diamond Ipod @ Yahoo! Video

And it was pretty impressive. Then there was the solid gold version (reportedly for around $20K) brought out by Xexoo.com

goldenshuffle.jpg

Solid gold is just a bit too expensive? Think maybe the gold plated blinged out iPod is the way to go? Well then, Goldstriker International is the place to look! There you can select 18ct or 24ct in white, rose or yellow gold and choose plain or individually set Swarovski crystals. The one below costs a mere £199.99 (yes its a UK store)

And the good news is that you can get these “skins” to fit other iPods as well - including the iPod touch.

Or perhaps you are the creative type that likes to bling your own stuff. If so, then maybe the people at Bling Bling (also in the UK) can inspire you with some of their efforts:

And then again, there are those who don’t glam the iPod itself but wear it as jewelery with a blinged out chain:

Have you glammed out your iPod? Can’t think of what gift to give your favorite person? Well, now you have some ideas to work with!

Tons of Free Videos To Watch On Our iPod

Posted on Mar 22, 2010 under free ipod videos, ipod accessories | No Comment

We have blogged about Wizzard and Juice but not really given much thought to what else is being produced for viewing in this format. We decided to do a bit of a recce and see what else is on offer. We are pleased to let you know there is a LOT out there - all for free! Today's post is about PodcastAlley - which has thousands video podcasts  -  all free.  Check the following demo of one of the available video podcast feeds that you can easily subscribe to and watch on your iPod. Just click on any of the titles to see what you could be watching on your iPod (just click the x to turn off the ads): [inline][/inline] Here is the link to the  video podcast feed for the ModTV (above) The only shortcoming to the site is finding the video you want. The audios are organized by genre - so you can browse by the type you want - but considering that there are thousands in some categories, this is not as big a help as we really need. The video podcasts don't seem to be organized by any kind of logic - so its a case of browsing and hoping to some extent. This is a pity as there are some really great video feeds in the list. Same problem at both Wizzard and iTunes. Actually, iTunes is the best of a bad lot. What is it with  these sites that can't (or won't?) add a simple search function to their sites???

Which iPod is best for iPod Movies?

Posted on Sep 02, 2009 under ipod accessories, ipod movies | 2 Comments Product DetailsWell the quick answer is NOT the new iPod shuffle, lol! While the shuffle may well end up being the first MP3 player the size of an ear bud (no prizes for guessing why we chose that analogy!), which will then mean, no doubt, that it stops being the cheapest as well, it is blind! And being blind means it can't do all the great things that the other iPods can do - and in fact is not really an iPod, in our book! What's more, "real" iPods just got way better - at least for one model. And that has inspired this post. Because the iPod Touch can now get updated with the latest iPhone software. Which, according to Apple, means:
When you get the new iPhone 3.0 Software Update for iPod touch, you get new features that make watching video, playing games, and listening to music even more fun.
See what we mean? The thing about the Touch is that it allows us to be a part of  the apps revolution that is going on at iTunes, and hundreds of great apps are free. Now, admitedly, that access does come at a cost!

Product DetailsProduct DetailsFor example, we can get the latest Apple iPod Classic 120 GB model for around $225. Or we can get the latest model Apple iPod Nano 16 GB for around $175.  But the latest iPod Touch 16 GB will set us back for around $275 and the 32 GB costs around $380!

So it costs more - and has way less memory that the Classic does.  What's more, the software upgrade is NOT free! We have to shell out another ten bucks for it.  So the question is - is it worth it to get a Touch? Is it worth the loss of memory and the extra $$ to get the sweeter  software and bigger screen size?

Well, how big are you pockets? How long is your travel time? How good is your eye sight? We think there is no contest but know plenty of people we can't even give a Touch to as they like their compact iPods just fine. So, while we give the prize to the Touch - because the new software will allow it to download movies and TV shows over Wi-Fi from the iTunes Store, we admit that music lovers will not agree. But they might - just - be interested in the new software benefit that enables us to listen to music wirelessly using bluetooth headphones.

For those that are interested, you can get the new iPhone software for the iPod Touch from the Apple site.

iPod Movies Just Got Easier To Watch!

Posted on Aug 05, 2009 under ipod accessories | 1 Comment Click to read more about the Joby Gorillapod Go-Go! on the Joby website We rarely ever promote accessories for iPods, but came across this neat new gizmo developed in the Land Down Under and just had to give it a rave! Its called Gorillapod Go-Go! (No idea why!) and is a super cool way to set up our iPods so that we can watch iPod movies or TV shows, in comfort. Its designed so that we can position our iPod just about anywhere - sitting like a TV on a flat surface, set up high and wrapped around a post, hooked into a crevice in a rock we are resting on after a vigorous free climb up a steep cliff - whatever! It attaches to our iPod with a super smart suction cup.The gizmo only costs  $29.95 AUD (about $25 in US$). More details at Maxwell the comapny that developed this neat little gadget (you will have to scroll down for the Go-Go! version)

celebrity ipods up for grabs

Posted on Feb 28, 2009 under ipod accessories, ipod news | No Comment Would you like to get a Britney Spears or Ellen Degeneres autographed iPods? - they're just two of the dozens of iPods that Tonic is auctioning in support of Music Rising.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUYXKD1e5tY

Unless you live there, its easy to forget the devastation that Hurricane Katrine and others have caused in the Gulf region of the US. That's why its so cool that MusicRising is still working to help the region recover and rebuild itself. It has determined to:
rebuild the musical heart and culture of the Gulf region by replacing the musical instruments and gear that were lost in the Inundation of 2005.
They are currently working to give instruments to churches and schools in this region. celebrity iPodscelebrity iPodszune-spacer.jpgBut here is the really cool part! Tons of musicians and film stars and other celebrities are helping to raise funds. For example - how would you like to own Brittany Spear's iPod - that she signed? Well, you can''t - its just been auctioned off by MusicRising for $851! But there are plenty of other celebrity iPods going to be auctioned off over the coming months. Currently you can bid on iPods owned and signed by famous designers: Alice Temperley (London-based fashion designer and creator of Temperly) , Donna Karan (fashion designer and the creator of the DKNY), Marc Ecko (founder of the Marc Ecko clothing line) and Marc Jacobs ( artistic director for Louis Vuitton). Only four days left to get one of these - with Marc Jacob's iPod getting to hottest bids. You can get the details on Tonic

Ipod left out of the limelight at Macworld

Posted on Jan 09, 2009 under ipod accessories, ipod software | 4 Comments Macworld Opens with Major New Product Announcements ...that are, for iPod, not "major" and, not "new" .

The image “http://farm1.static.flickr.com/136/353227773_4805ee7081.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Not a particularly impressive event for iPod owners. OK, there were some sessions for educators to promote the use of iPods and/or iPhones in the classroom that may have been of interest to a very select few. But otherwise the event was fairly ho hum for iPod owners. The only "new" products worth mentioning, are the Phoenix iPod Recovery System - designed to:
recover music files, video files, podcasts, audiobooks and other inaccessible media from frozen or damaged equipment.
Stellar Phoenix iPod Recovery screenshot 2But even so, its not "new" . It was reviewed by Softpedia back in August 2008, and anyway, there are other products that do this, so the concept is not new, either. So not a really life altering announcement! Stellar provide a free demo version of the software (you can download from their site). The demo version will repair corrupted and deleted music and video files (not clear if other media files are also repaired with the demo) BUT, you can only save the recovered music and video files by purchasing the full version of the software!! So not sure what the benefits of the free demo are? Perhaps its just a hook to get us to try - then tell us "yes, we have detected 300 music and video files that are corrupted and they are now repaired.... and if you purchase the software you can have them! Still, at $US39.99, that might be worth it? . The second "new" product is, in fact, the debut for:
the 3rd generation of the Hookup- Lanyard, which wirelessly connects the iPod nano or iPod touch to a cell phone
Again, a useful tool - no doubt about it. But 3rd generation is hardly worthy of the title: "major new product"!

Perhaps of more interest is the new iPod Docking station with WiFi streaming capability that Lenntek also plans to release at Macworld. However, whilst this capability may be new to Lenntek, its not new to the iPod world! There are, after all, other docking stations already on the market with these capabilities.

So a disappointing event for iPod owners with little to excite and sadly, nothing worth lining up for hours or days to get!
